Coker students are encouraged to explore their passions and craft unique stories. The Kooper Leadership Academy initiative allows them to step outside their comfort zones.

Coker alumnus Gary Kooper ‘91 designed this cohort-based experiential learning program to equip students with essential leadership skills, expand their professional networks, and create opportunities for positive community engagement.

Each spring, students embark on a nine-week transformative journey, participating in job shadowing, informational interviews with alumni, and team-based community impact projects. These activities are coordinated by dedicated program mentors from the offices of the Center for Diversity, Interfaith, and Inclusion Education, the Center for Leadership & Entrepreneurship, Institutional Advancement, the Office of Alumni Engagement, and the Office of Student Engagement. 

Meanwhile, Gary Kooper plays a pivotal role in shaping the program’s foundation, leading four dynamic workshops focused on the core principles of Time, Focus, and Effort—critical elements in achieving long-term success.

“Gary does an exceptional job mentoring, coaching, and inspiring our Coker students to become the best version of themselves while making a positive difference in others' lives.” Director of the Center for Leadership & Entrepreneurship Andy Burkemper said. “I am grateful to partner with multiple offices across campus to provide this life-changing, 60-day program for our diverse cohort of students each spring.”

Each year, participants embrace the challenge, commit to the process, and emerge as confident, forward-thinking leaders ready to make their mark in their communities and careers.

Now in its fifth year, the 2025 Kooper Leadership Academy continues to thrive, pursuing its mission of leadership excellence and professional development. 

“The Kooper Leadership Academy continues to be a shining example of the mission we pursue every day within the Center for Leadership & Entrepreneurship: inspiring and developing authentic, innovative student leaders who leave their mark on campus, in the community, and in their careers,” Andy Burkemper said.
