Dan Hill, Director of Kalmia Gardens, has been selected to join the 2026 Mission Patagonia cohort. This prestigious program brings educators and conservation leaders to the Patagonian region of Chile to study one of the world's most unique natural landscapes. The expedition will take place from March 2 through March 12, 2026.
Hill is a respected environmental educator in South Carolina and a long-standing member of the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina (EEASC). Through EEASC, he learned about Mission Patagonia and was encouraged to apply. His acceptance into the cohort reflects both his deep knowledge of the natural world and his commitment to sharing that knowledge with others.
Since joining Coker University, Hill has strengthened the Garden’s role as an outdoor classroom and community resource. He has led educational programs for students and families, supported research opportunities, and expanded hands-on learning experiences. He played a central role in Week in the Wild, a popular program that helps young learners explore local ecosystems. Hill also guided key environmental initiatives on the property, including a stormwater restoration project that protects the wildlife habitat of Black Creek and improves long-term sustainability within the Gardens.
“Mission Patagonia is a chance to experience a part of the world that has shaped so much of our understanding of conservation,” Hill said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to study its ecosystems and bring those lessons back to South Carolina. I hope that this journey will help others see the natural world with fresh eyes and feel inspired to protect the places we call home.”
A key part of the Mission Patagonia program is the expectation that participants return to their communities and share what they have learned. Hill plans to bring these experiences back to South Carolina classrooms, local groups, and educational networks. His outreach will help others see how global perspectives can inspire local action to protect shared natural resources.
