Dan and Sheila Schmotzer’s ties to Coker University run deep. What began as Dan’s arrival on campus in 1987 grew into a lifelong connection for their entire family. Sheila continued her education at Coker and graduated in 1989, while their daughter MiMi joined the legacy as a member of the Class of 2011. Over the years, the Schmotzers have remained committed to Coker. We sat down with the couple to explore what giving to Coker means to them.

Q: What is your connection to Coker University?

Dan: My connection to Coker University started in August 1987 when I was hired as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Also, my wife, Sheila, graduated from Coker in 1989, and my daughter graduated in 2011.

Sheila: I attended Coker in 1987 and graduated in the spring of 1989. My time at Coker meant a great deal to me personally, as it allowed me to continue my college education. It was a dream come true to learn that Coker was one of the few colleges that had a dance major and was nationally recognized for its dance department. I obtained my BA in Dance and, on a professional level, went on to own my own dance studio.

Q: What does being a part of the Coker community mean to you?

Dan: Maintaining a connection with the Coker community has always been very important to me as I try to contribute to its ongoing success and reputation. From attending events and donating to mentoring current students and advocating for the school, my goal has always been to be the best ambassador for Coker that I can be.

Sheila: I’ve stayed connected to Coker as my husband, Dan, has never left. Local events and catching up with former faculty, friends at basketball games, alumni, and students at events are so special, and I always look forward to them.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory or experience from your time at Coker?

Dan: Too many to mention. As I have grown older, I have realized how much Coker has done for me. They trusted me as one of their own, and for that, I am so grateful. That is the memory I am thankful for.

Sheila: My favorite memories of Coker were the home basketball games in the Timberlake Lawton Gymnasium. There has also been nothing as exciting as seeing the amazing new additions to campus, like the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center and the DeLoach Center. It was an honor to attend both dedications.

Q: What advice would you give to current Coker students or recent graduates?

Dan: For current students, focus on a healthy balance between academics and personal life. Embrace the experience and get involved on campus by joining clubs, organizations, and teams. Meet new people. For recent graduates, start building good habits early, such as exercising, eating healthily, and budgeting. Be proactive in your job search and persistent in your efforts.

Sheila: Go after all your dreams and stay in touch with those who cross your path at Coker.

Q: How has your experience with giving back to Coker impacted your life or perspective?

Dan: Engaging with Coker University after graduation and retirement has been incredibly rewarding, offering benefits that extend beyond simply giving back. I have found great joy in strengthening connections and building community with my school.

Sheila: I’ve been inspired to give back and support the University, as they have always been there for me. I recently was able to share my children’s books that I have authored during an Alumni Reunion weekend.

Q: Was there a particular moment, program, or individual that motivated your support?

Dan: The day they hired me in 1987 and allowed me to grow as a person, coach, and teacher. What a ride it has been. Dr. Daniels hiring me, the Athletics Program, and putting my name on the floor in the DeLoach Center all motivate my support.

Q: What do you hope your gifts will accomplish at Coker?

Dan: When I give a gift to Coker, I hope it will support student success, strengthen academic excellence and innovation, improve institutional growth and sustainability, and have an impact in the community. My goal has always been to make a positive and lasting impact on my alma mater and the lives of its current and future students.

Q: What is your favorite Coker tradition or event?

Dan: Homecoming. I have not missed one since 1987.

Q: If you could describe Coker University in three words, what would they be?

Dan: Learning, Adapting, Growing. Or, James Douglas Daniels, who served as Coker’s president from 1981 to 2002.

Q: Did you have a favorite professor?

Sheila: My favorite professor was Dr. Nancy Bolden. She always had her office open for chats, and she is still a personal friend of mine. She did so much to put Coker on the map in dance education. I will forever be grateful for the confidence and encouragement she gave me.

Together, Dan and Sheila Schmotzer represent the spirit of Coker University at its best and continue to invest in the University that has given them so much.
