Hartsville, S.C. – January 15, 2018 – Coker College’s 45th Annual Faculty Show will open with a reception in the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building this Thursday, January 18, at 7pm. The event is free, open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be open for viewing through February 2.
The Coker College art department starts off each year with a show of the faculty’s most recent work. The 45th Annual Faculty Show includes work by professors Jean Grosser, Nate Gulledge, and Alyssa Prince.
Jean Grosser, Chair of the Art Department, has taught at Coker since 1985. Her large-scale drawings examine issues of human rights and social justice. “The drawings reference neo-Nazi hate books and internet trolling to examine ethnic and racial hatred. The sculpture, inspired by the proliferation of guns in the United States, addresses our reverence for firearms and the toll they take on society,” says Grosser. Nate Gulledge, a graphic designer, joined the faculty in 2016, and is also a graduate of Coker College. Gulledge received his M.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where he is working on an on-going project that combines illustration, graphic design, and motion design, and is in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Global Health Education and the Baltimore City Health Department. Alyssa Prince teaches drawing and painting. She joined Coker’s faculty in 2016 after earning her B.F.A. and Art History Minor from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a M.F.A. from Clemson University. Prince will be showing a selection of recent paintings that demonstrate a correlation between the senses and memory. She says, “As we recall moments from our past, we remember our visual experiences, the way the light hits the trees, the way in which we felt very small compared to our surroundings, or the infinite space around us. In turn, the paintings reflect these ideas; they display a fragmentary visual structure that alludes to our senses, emotional feelings of awareness, and wonder of the experience.” Learn more about Prince by visiting www.alyssareiserprince.com.
