110 Undergraduates, 23 Graduate Students Earn Degrees
Coker University awarded degrees to 133 students, including 23 graduate students, at three graduation ceremonies on campus this weekend.
Those earning degrees were also recognized for a number of honors, including membership in Alpha Alpha Alpha (National Honor Society for First Generation College Students), Alpha Phi Sigma (International Criminal Justice Honor Society), Delta Eta Pi (National Dance Honor Society), Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), Lambda Pi Eta (National Communications Honor Society), and Psi Chi (International Honor Society in Psychology. Coker also honored those part of Dean’s Commendation, Honors Program, International Study, and World Scholars.
In a Friday evening ceremony, the Honorable James H. “Jay” Lucas, the speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, addressed those Coker students earning their master in science degrees. Saturday morning’s undergraduate commencement address was delivered by Senator Gerald Malloy. Afternoon graduates heard from Mindy Taylor, a district manager for government and community relations in South Carolina for Duke Energy and member of the Coker University Board of Trustees.
Since 1908, Coker University, formerly Coker College, has been dedicated to fostering participation in the community of scholarship and the development of ethical character, leadership skills, and social responsibility. This history is reflected in its graduation ceremony, which includes a formal academic procession, use of the University Seal, the presence of the Mace & Heraldic Staff, and the singing of the Alma Mater.
