When Lisa Atkinson walked into Coker University in 2011, she never imagined the campus would become such an essential part of her life. Hired by Dr. Steve Terry, a longtime member of Coker's leadership staff and Staff Emeritus, Lisa's first role as a part-time front desk manager was to answer phones and greet visitors. Fourteen years later, she has built a career that reflects both her dedication and the University’s commitment to supporting its people. Today, she serves as Coker’s Assistant Director of Operations in Admissions.

Her path has been anything but linear. Lisa took on each new opportunity with determination, whether coordinating campus visits, managing admissions operations, or supporting prospective students and their families. Along the way, she has seen Coker change and grow, and she has grown with it.

For Lisa, Coker has never been just a workplace.

“One of the main reasons I’ve stayed at Coker is the strong sense of community and purpose here,” she said. “I truly believe in the mission of the University, and I see firsthand the impact we have on students’ lives.”

That sense of community became especially important during some of her most challenging seasons. In 2023, Lisa was diagnosed with cancer. While she underwent surgeries and recovery, she says Coker’s leadership and her colleagues surrounded her with compassion and flexibility.

“Since my cancer diagnosis and my mom's recent health issues, I’ve felt supported by Coker through understanding and caring leadership, flexibility when needed, and colleagues who truly care,” she said. “The University has created an environment where I can continue to excel in my role while also taking care of my health.”

Coker has given Lisa the chance to balance her career with family life, whether that meant attending her children’s games years ago or caring for her mother today. She credits Coker’s family-first culture with helping her succeed both personally and professionally.

Now, as she helps guide students and their families through the admissions process, Lisa brings with her not only years of experience but also a deep belief in the transformative power of a Coker education. She knows firsthand how much the right support can change a person’s life, having experienced it herself.
