Hartsville, S.C. – March 26, 2018 – Coker College’s dance department is hosting its first-ever alumni dance concert on Friday, April 20, 7:30pm in the Watson Theater.
Meredith Sims, assistant professor of dance at Coker College says, “This opportunity to showcase our alumni allows us to share with the Coker community the many talents of these performers. It allows these artists to come back home, so to speak, to share their artistry and reconnect with faculty, staff, and the community. It is also a great opportunity for our current students to see all the possibilities a career in dance can provide. The audience will be treated to solo performances, collaborations among dancers, dance on film and students performing the work of alumni.”
The concert will include performances by Darrell Daney (2016), Midori Darr (2016), Elsie Mufuka (2008) of MufukaWorks Dance Company, Cierra Stinson (2016), Italy Welton (2014), and Rezenkia Snipe Wilson (2007) of Zenistry Dance Company. Students will be performing choreography by Devin Jennings (2012) and Heather Norment (2007) will be showing a dance film.
Coker College dance alumni are currently working in a variety of dance and dance related fields, such as professional dancers, choreographers, performers, K-12 public school dance educators, college adjunct instructors, artistic directors, dance studio instructors, and pursuing graduate degrees. Several have won awards including Elsie Mufuka as the 2018 Coker College Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Italy Welton was recently nominated for a New York Dance Dance and Performance Bessie Award as a member of the cast of we free choreographed by Marguerite Hemmings.
