A new painting hangs on the walls of Coker University’s Admissions Office, greeting visitors with a timeless view of campus. The piece, depicting the road leading to Memorial Hall with the Bell Tower rising beside it, was commissioned by members of the Class of 1975 in honor of their 50th reunion.
The artist, Mary Ann Reames ’76, studied under Coker professors Kim Chalmers, Nicky Brumbaugh, and Jim Aplin. “My four years at Coker were truly formative,” Reames said. “Each of my professors shaped how I see and create art.”
Reames described the painting as both a tribute and a homecoming. “I hope people feel a sense of nostalgia and pride, that spark of recognition that says, I was part of this place, and it’s a part of me. I wanted the painting to reflect the beauty and legacy of Coker, and the lifelong friendships that began there,” she said. Azaleas in bloom soften the scene, a nod to her memories of photographing campus and nearby Kalmia Gardens.
The project was organized by Diane Dinneny ’75, who worked with classmates and Reames to bring the vision to life. “It felt more meaningful to have a fellow alum create something that celebrates our shared Coker experience,” Dinneny said. Classmate Susie Guerry ’75 helped with framing and delivery, ensuring the painting made its way safely to campus.
As plans continue for where the piece will ultimately hang, Dinneny hopes it will be displayed in a building that many people visit. She wants alumni, students, and guests to be able to see and enjoy it. The painting represents the Coker experience at its best, a community built on creativity, connection, and pride that lasts long after graduation.
