Coker University is welcoming two new members to its Board of Trustees, Carol Turner Atkinson ’73 and Glenn “Monty” Bell. Both bring a wealth of experience, a deep love for their communities, and a shared belief in the transformative power of education.
Atkinson, a Coker alumna, earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and psychology before completing her master’s in mathematics at Clemson University. Her career has spanned teaching at Coker, Francis Marion, Limestone, and the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, as well as launching her own business, Quality Management Systems, which has provided statistical consulting and training for nearly four decades. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she has been a loyal supporter of Coker, serving as president of the Alumni Association, leading on the Alumni Association Board, and contributing as a member of the Visitors Board. She is also active in her church and community, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and mentoring future leaders.
Bell, a Darlington County native, brings more than 16 years of legal and civic leadership to the board. After earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from Morehouse College and his law degree from the University of South Carolina, he built a career dedicated to service. He served as a criminal prosecutor, then as a defense attorney, and now serves as Senior Solicitor of South Carolina’s Fourth Circuit. His work has strengthened justice and safety across Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, and Marlboro counties. Outside the courtroom, he has given his time and talent to organizations such as Carolina Pines Hospital, the Butler Heritage Foundation, and the Pee Dee Math, Science, and Technology Academy. His leadership is rooted in a commitment to fairness, opportunity, and building strong communities.
“Carol and Monty embody the spirit of Coker. They believe in education as a force for good, and they have spent their lives putting that belief into action,” said President Natalie Harder. “We are honored to welcome them to the Board of Trustees, and we know their voices will be invaluable as we continue to prepare graduates who make a difference in the world.”
With the addition of Atkinson and Bell, Coker strengthens its tradition of bringing together leaders who are deeply connected to the Pee Dee region and invested in shaping a bright future for students and the communities they will serve.
